Blue Myrtle Cactus
A Living Architectural Masterpiece
The Myrtillocactus geometrizans, commonly known as the Blue Candle Cactus or Whortleberry Cactus, is one of the most beloved columnar cacti in the world. Native to the high deserts of Mexico, this cactus is prized for its clean lines, geometric precision, and a unique color palette that shifts from deep green to a frosty, ethereal blue.
Frosty Blue-Gray Hue: Its most striking feature is the thick, waxy glaucous coating (farina) that covers the skin. This powdery layer gives the cactus a stunning blue-gray or turquoise finish, which serves as a natural sunscreen against intense desert rays.
Geometric Ribbed Structure: True to its name, this cactus grows in a highly organized fashion. It typically features 5 to 6 deep, sharp ribs, creating a perfect star-shaped cross-section. The areoles are spaced evenly along the ribs, each hosting a few short, dark, dagger-like spines.
Candelabra Branching: While it starts as a single upright "candle," mature specimens develop a majestic, multi-branched candelabra shape. This dramatic growth habit makes it a premier choice for high-end landscaping or as a bold, vertical interior accent.
Sweet "Whortleberry" Fruit: In early summer, it produces small, creamy-white flowers that give way to dark purple, edible fruits known as garambullos. These fruits taste remarkably like sweet blueberries or huckleberries and are a popular treat in Mexican markets.
All potted plants are local pickup only. Shipped plants will be bare root (no pot or soil).

Care and Growing
The Blue Candle is a fast-growing and resilient species, making it an excellent choice for those who want to see visible progress in their cactus garden.
Light Needs: Prefers Full Sun to Very Bright Light. To maintain that iconic frosty blue color, the plant needs plenty of direct sunlight. If grown in too much shade, the new growth will appear dark green and thin.
Water Needs: Moderate (for a cactus). During the spring and summer growing season, it appreciates regular watering once the soil has dried out. It is more tolerant of water than desert "balls" but should still be kept almost completely dry in winter.
Soil Needs: Requires Well-Draining, Gritty Soil. A standard cactus and succulent mix with added perlite or pumice works perfectly. It is not particularly picky about soil nutrients but demands excellent drainage.
Temperature & Hardiness: Best kept in temperatures above 25°F (-4°C). While it can handle a light, brief frost, it prefers to stay warm and is ideally suited for USDA zones 9–11 or as a container plant in cooler climates.
Add the cool, sculptural elegance of the Blue Candle Cactus to your collection and watch it transform into a desert icon!
