Stenocactus multicostatus
Care and Growing
The Brain Cactus is a slow-growing, resilient species that stays relatively small, making it a perfect candidate for specialized container gardening.
Light Needs: Prefers Bright, Indirect Light to Full Sun. While it loves sunlight, the thin ribs can be sensitive to extreme, scorching midday sun. Bright, filtered light is ideal for maintaining its tight, wavy form and deep green color.
Water Needs: Low. Follow the "soak and dry" method. It is important to ensure the soil is completely dry before watering again. During the winter dormancy, watering should be reduced to almost zero to prevent rot.
Soil Needs: Requires Extremely Well-Draining, Gritty Soil. A mineral-heavy mix (70% grit/pumice to 30% organic) is best to ensure that water moves quickly through the pot and away from the delicate root system.
Temperature & Hardiness: Hardy to approximately 20°F (-7°C) if kept dry. Like many Mexican highland cacti, it appreciates a cool (but frost-free) winter rest to encourage a heavy bloom in the spring.
Add the fascinating, wavy complexity of the Brain Cactus to your collection—a living testament to the beauty of geometric nature!
