Candelabra Cactus

A Towering Masterpiece of Desert Design

The Stenocereus dumortierii, commonly known as the Candelabra Cactus, is one of the most structurally impressive species in the Stenocereus genus. Native to the semi-arid regions of Central Mexico, this cactus is named for its dramatic growth habit—eventually forming a massive, multi-branched crown that resembles an ornate candle holder.

  • Distinctive "Jointed" Segments: Unlike many columnar cacti that grow in one continuous pillar, the Candelabra Cactus grows in clear, seasonal spurts. This creates visible horizontal "rings" or joints along the stems, giving the plant a unique, segmented look that tracks its years of growth.

  • Frosty Blue-Green Skin: The stems are covered in a beautiful glaucous waxy coating, providing a cool, blue-gray or teal tint. This waxy layer protects the plant from intense UV rays and helps it retain moisture during long dry spells.

  • Intricate Spine Patterns: It features 5 to 9 deep, sharp ribs lined with closely set areoles. The spines are typically a mix of grey and yellowish-tan, forming a neat, bristly "zip" up each rib that catches the light and adds a rugged texture to its sleek form.

  • Small, Reddish-White Blooms: In late spring to summer, mature specimens produce small, funnel-shaped flowers that are white with reddish-brown outer petals. These are followed by small, round fruits that are highly valued by local wildlife in its native habitat.

This cactus is about 5.5 inches tall.

All potted plants are local pickup only. Shipped plants will be bare root (no pot or soil).

Care and Growing

The Candelabra Cactus is a slow-to-moderate grower that is incredibly resilient once established, making it a "legacy" plant for any collection.

  • Light Needs: Requires Full Sun. To maintain its intense blue color and strong, thick stems, this cactus needs as much direct sunlight as possible. If grown in too much shade, it may lose its glaucous coating and turn a plain dark green.

  • Water Needs: Low. Like most Stenocereus, it is highly drought-tolerant. Use the "soak and dry" method, ensuring the soil is completely dry before watering again. During the winter months, reduce watering significantly to prevent root rot.

  • Soil Needs: Requires Mineral-Heavy, Fast-Draining Soil. A mixture of cactus soil with plenty of grit, pumice, or crushed granite is ideal. It prefers a substrate that allows the roots to breathe and prevents any standing water near the base.

  • Temperature & Hardiness: Hardy to approximately 25°F (-4°C) for short periods. While it is quite tough, it should be protected from prolonged hard freezes. It thrives best in warm climates (USDA zones 9–11) or as a prominent container plant that can be moved during extreme weather.

Add the grand, architectural elegance of the Candelabra Cactus to your collection and watch it grow into a desert icon!
