Colombian Pincushion Cactus
A Compact Gem from the Andes
The Mammillaria columbiana, or Colombian Pincushion Cactus, is a handsome and reliable species native to the high-altitude regions of Colombia and Venezuela. This small, globular cactus is highly favored for its dense texture, ease of cultivation, and charming floral displays.
Dense Texture: The solitary, globular stems are covered in numerous tubercles, each tipped with a rosette of spines. The radial spines are fine and white, while the slightly longer central spines range from dark brown to reddish-black, creating a beautiful, fuzzy, and dense pattern over the cactus body.
Clustering Habit: While it often starts as a single globe, the M. columbiana readily produces offsets (pups) around its base, eventually forming attractive, tight clusters or mounds that spill over the edges of its container.
Ring of Blooms: Like many Mammillaria species, this cactus delights its owner with a spectacular, colorful ring of flowers encircling the apex of the stem in spring. The blooms are typically small, funnel-shaped, and deep pink to reddish-purple.
All potted plants are local pickup only. Shipped plants will be bare root (no pot or soil).

Simple Care for a Resilient Plant
The Colombian Pincushion Cactus is remarkably tough and adaptable, making it an excellent choice for beginners and those seeking a low-maintenance, colorful houseplant.
Light Needs: Prefers Full Sun to Bright, Intense Light. High light levels encourage dense, colorful spination and promote heavy flowering.
Water Needs: Very Low. It is highly drought-tolerant. Use the "soak and dry" method—water thoroughly only when the soil has dried out completely. Water sparingly or not at all during the winter dormancy.
Soil Needs: Must be planted in a highly porous, fast-draining cactus and succulent mix to prevent any moisture retention around the roots.
