Cucumber Cactus

$30.00

A Smooth and Showy Hanging Marvel

The Echinocereus gentryi (often classified as Echinocereus scheeri subsp. gentryi) is a fascinating departure from the typical "spiny" hedgehog cactus. Native to the rugged canyons of Sonora and Chihuahua, Mexico, this cactus is prized for its unusual, smooth texture and its dramatic, pendulous growth habit, making it a "must-have" for hanging displays.

  • Unique "Cucumber" Stems: Unlike its prickly relatives, this cactus features soft, cylindrical stems that are nearly spineless. These dark green, "naked" stems resemble small cucumbers or sausages, reaching up to 12 inches in length before they begin to elegantly drape over the sides of a container.

  • Massive Trumpet Blooms: The true show begins in late spring to early summer. The plant produces oversized, trumpet-shaped flowers in a vibrant magenta or rose-pink. These blooms are incredibly showy, often featuring a paler throat and staying open for several days—longer than many other Echinocereus species.

  • Low-Profile Spination: While it is a cactus, its spines are minute, white, and often barely visible to the naked eye. This makes it a "user-friendly" plant that is much easier to handle and repot than its more aggressive cousins.

  • Clumping and Trailing: As it matures, it forms dense, heavy clumps of multiple stems. In its natural habitat, it often hangs from cliff faces, a look you can replicate by using a high-quality hanging basket or a tall pedestal pot.

All potted plants are local pickup only. Shipped plants will be bare root (no pot or soil).

Care and Growing

The Cucumber Cactus is a fast-growing and resilient species that is particularly well-suited for indoor enthusiasts and those with limited space.

  • Light Needs: Prefers Bright, Filtered Light to Partial Sun. While it loves light, the smooth skin can be more sensitive to scorching than heavily spined cacti. In very hot climates, afternoon shade is recommended to prevent the stems from turning a stressed reddish-purple.

  • Water Needs: Low. Like all Echinocereus, it is susceptible to rot if kept wet. Use the "soak and dry" method during the growing season. It requires a cool, dry dormancy period in winter to trigger its spectacular blooming cycle.

  • Soil Needs: Requires Very Porous, Gritty Soil. A standard cactus mix heavily amended with pumice or perlite is essential for drainage, especially since this species is often grown in hanging pots where airflow to the roots is key.

  • Temperature & Hardiness: Hardy to approximately 25°F (-4°C) for short periods if kept bone-dry. However, it thrives best when kept frost-free. It is a perfect candidate for USDA zones 9b–11 or as a year-round indoor plant.

Add the whimsical, "naked" charm of the Cucumber Cactus to your collection and enjoy one of the most beautiful floral displays in the cactus world!
