Goats Horns

A Wild and Sculptural Desert Masterpiece

The Astrophytum capricorne, famously known as the Goat’s Horn Cactus, is one of the most visually striking members of the Astrophytum family. Native to the rocky highlands of Northern Mexico, this cactus is a true conversation piece, evolving from a globular juvenile into a majestic, tall column adorned with "wicked" looking (but surprisingly flexible) spines.

  • Signature "Goat Horn" Spines: This cactus earns its name from its long, dark, and wiry spines that twist and curl upward, mimicking the horns of a wild goat. These spines are not just for show; in the wild, they help shade the plant and mimic dead grass to hide it from thirsty herbivores.

  • Intricate White Flecking: The deep green body of the capricorne is often densely covered in tiny, raised white tufts or "flocking." This gives the plant a snowy or speckled appearance, a classic trait of the Astrophytum genus that provides natural sun protection.

  • Massive, Silky Blooms: One of the most rewarding aspects of this species is its flower. It produces large, brilliant yellow blossoms (up to 3 inches wide) with a deep, contrasting red or orange throat. The petals have a shimmering, satin-like texture and a sweet fragrance.

  • Geometric Ribbing: Typically featuring 7 to 8 very sharp, prominent ribs, this cactus has a distinct star-shaped cross-section when viewed from above, making it a favorite for geometric garden designs.

All potted plants are local pickup only. Shipped plants will be bare root (no pot or soil).

Care and Growing

The Goat’s Horn is a hardy, slow-growing cactus that is highly sought after by collectors for its rugged, "ancient" look.

  • Light Needs: Prefers Full Sun to Very Bright Light. To maintain its dense white flocking and ensure regular blooming, it needs plenty of direct sunlight. However, in extremely hot climates, some afternoon filtered light can prevent the body from scorching.

  • Water Needs: Low. Like most Astrophytum, it is sensitive to overwatering. Follow a strict "soak and dry" cycle. During its winter dormancy, watering should be stopped completely to prevent root and body rot.

  • Soil Needs: Requires Mineral-Rich, Gritty Soil. It thrives in a mix that is heavy on pumice, lava rock, or coarse sand with very little organic matter. A slightly alkaline soil (adding a bit of limestone) mimics its natural habitat.

  • Temperature & Hardiness: Relatively cold-hardy for a cactus, it can tolerate brief dips down to 20°F (-7°C) if kept bone-dry, but it is best protected from hard freezes.

Bring the rugged, artistic beauty of the Mexican high desert into your home with the Goat’s Horn Cactus!
