Echinocactus grusonii
Care and Growing
The Golden Barrel is an incredibly hardy and long-lived cactus, often living for many decades with very minimal intervention.
Light Needs: Requires Full Sun. To maintain its deep yellow spine color and its tight, spherical shape, it needs as much direct sunlight as possible. If grown indoors, a very bright south-facing window is a must.
Water Needs: Low. Like most desert barrels, it stores a vast amount of water in its fleshy body. Water deeply only when the soil is completely dry. During the winter, watering should be stopped almost entirely to prevent rot.
Soil Needs: Requires Extremely Well-Draining, Gritty Soil. Use a commercial cactus mix and add extra pumice, perlite, or coarse sand. It prefers a mineral-heavy substrate that doesn't hold onto moisture for long.
Temperature & Hardiness: Hardy to approximately 15°F to 20°F (-7°C) if kept bone-dry. While it is one of the more cold-tolerant cacti, it is best to protect young plants from hard freezes to avoid scarring the beautiful golden skin.
Bring the iconic, sun-kissed elegance of the Golden Barrel Cactus to your home and enjoy a lifetime of desert splendor!
