Golden-Flowered Pincushion

$7.00

Elevate your cactus collection with the captivating Mammillaria marksiana, a distinct and beautiful species native to the rocky deserts of Mexico. This globular cactus is prized for its unique combination of texture and color, making it a standout specimen in any sunny spot.

Signature Aesthetics

  • Golden Yellow Blooms: Unlike the typical pinks and whites of many Mammillaria species, M. marksiana produces a brilliant ring of bright, greenish-yellow flowers. This intense yellow is rare among its cousins and creates a spectacular, sunny halo around the crown of the plant in late winter to early spring.

  • Woolly Contrast: The plump, light green body is segmented by soft, woolly axils. These tufts of snow-white wool provide a striking contrast against the stem and are especially prominent in the blooming area.

  • Sparse Golden Spines: Its sparse, needle-like spines are a beautiful golden yellow to brown, accentuating the bright green stem without being overly dense or aggressive.

All potted plants are local pickup only. Shipped plants will be bare root (no pot or soil).

Care and Cultivation

  • Growth Habit: Typically grows as a flattened-globose to round cactus, eventually forming small clusters. It is a slow-growing but rewarding species that remains small and manageable for container gardening.

  • Light: Prefers full sun or bright, direct light. Strong light encourages the best spine color, heaviest wool production, and abundant flowering.

  • Watering: Requires the classic "soak and dry" method. Water thoroughly during the spring and summer growing season, allowing the soil to completely dry before watering again. Keep almost entirely dry during the winter dormancy period to prevent rot.

  • Soil: Use a very porous and gritty cactus mix that drains quickly.

The Mammillaria marksiana is an easy-to-care-for collector's item, perfect for those seeking a vibrant and unusually colored bloom in their desert garden or windowsill display.
