Irish Mittens
A Sculptural Cactus with Colorful Charm
The Irish Mittens Prickly Pear (Opuntia monacantha 'Variegata'), often referred to simply as the Variegated Prickly Pear, is a colorful and architectural succulent that commands attention. This unique form of the common Prickly Pear is prized for its stunning, painterly variegation and structural elegance.
Colorful Pads: The flat, paddle-like segments (pads) feature mesmerizing irregular splashes of green, creamy yellow, and white. When grown in bright, intense sunlight or subjected to cool stress, the new pads often flush with beautiful rosy-pink or magenta tones, living up to its whimsical "Irish Mittens" name.
Architectural Form: This cactus grows upright, forming a shrubby, branching silhouette. Its flat pads grow quickly and stack upon one another, providing year-round sculptural interest that is perfect for contemporary or desert-themed gardens.
Sparse Spines: While it does have small, barbed hairs (glochids), the O. monacantha typically has sparse, single spines, making it one of the less fearsome Opuntia varieties to handle, though caution is always advised.
Easy Propagation: Pads can be easily rooted to grow new plants, making it simple to expand your collection or share with friends.
All potted plants are local pickup only. Shipped plants will be bare root (no pot or soil).

Care and Placement
The Variegated Prickly Pear is a tough, resilient, and famously drought-tolerant plant.
Light Needs: Thrives in Full Sun. High light levels are essential to maintain compact growth, intense variegation, and the desirable pink stress colors.
Water Needs: Very Low. Water deeply only when the soil has dried out completely. Reduce watering significantly in winter. Overwatering is the main threat.
Soil Needs: Requires a Fast-Draining Cactus/Succulent Mix. A pot with excellent drainage is mandatory.
Hardiness: Generally hardy to USDA Zones 9–11. Protect from prolonged hard freezes.
