Thelocactus macdowellii
Care and Growing
The Silver Lace Cactus is a slow-growing but hardy species that rewards the patient grower with reliable, spectacular blooms every spring.
Light Needs: Prefers Full Sun to Very Bright Light. To keep the white spines dense and bright, it needs plenty of direct sunlight. If grown in low light, the spines will become sparse and the plant will lose its iconic "frosted" look.
Water Needs: Low. Like many mountain cacti, it is sensitive to "wet feet." Use the "soak and dry" method strictly. During the winter months, keep the plant completely dry to allow it to rest and prepare for spring flowering.
Soil Needs: Requires Mineral-Rich, Gritty Soil. It thrives in a mix that contains plenty of limestone, pumice, or crushed granite. Avoid heavy organic soils, as this species is prone to rot if moisture lingers.
Temperature & Hardiness: This is a surprisingly cold-hardy cactus, able to tolerate temperatures down to 15°F (-10°C) for short periods if kept bone-dry. It actually benefits from a cool winter rest to trigger its heavy spring bloom.
Bring the high-contrast, "frozen" beauty of the Silver Lace Cactus to your home and enjoy one of nature's finest floral displays!
