MacDowell's Pincushion Cactus

A Vision in Frost and Neon

The Thelocactus macdowellii (also known as Thelocactus conothelos var. macdowellii) is widely considered one of the most beautiful species in the genus. Hailing from the high-altitude limestone cliffs of Northern Mexico, this cactus is prized for its "shimmering" white appearance and its ability to produce some of the most vibrant flowers in the succulent world.

  • Dazzling White Spination: The body of the cactus is almost entirely obscured by a dense interlacing of bright, snow-white spines. This "lacy" covering gives the plant a frosty, silver-white glow that stands out dramatically against dark soil or green companion plants.

  • Neon Magenta Contrast: In early spring, the macdowellii puts on a world-class show. It produces large, funnel-shaped flowers in a brilliant, glowing magenta or hot pink. The contrast of the neon petals against the pure white spines is one of the most striking sights in any collection.

  • Perfectly Symmetrical Globe: It maintains a neat, globular shape that may become slightly elongated with age. It stays relatively compact, usually reaching about 3 to 4 inches in diameter, making it an ideal choice for high-end windowsill displays or specialized rock gardens.

  • Golden Areoles: If you look closely through the white spines, the "nodes" (areoles) often have a touch of yellow or gold wool, adding a hidden layer of warmth to its otherwise "cool" silver aesthetic.

All potted plants are local pickup only. Shipped plants will be bare root (no pot or soil).

Care and Growing

The Silver Lace Cactus is a slow-growing but hardy species that rewards the patient grower with reliable, spectacular blooms every spring.

  • Light Needs: Prefers Full Sun to Very Bright Light. To keep the white spines dense and bright, it needs plenty of direct sunlight. If grown in low light, the spines will become sparse and the plant will lose its iconic "frosted" look.

  • Water Needs: Low. Like many mountain cacti, it is sensitive to "wet feet." Use the "soak and dry" method strictly. During the winter months, keep the plant completely dry to allow it to rest and prepare for spring flowering.

  • Soil Needs: Requires Mineral-Rich, Gritty Soil. It thrives in a mix that contains plenty of limestone, pumice, or crushed granite. Avoid heavy organic soils, as this species is prone to rot if moisture lingers.

  • Temperature & Hardiness: This is a surprisingly cold-hardy cactus, able to tolerate temperatures down to 15°F (-10°C) for short periods if kept bone-dry. It actually benefits from a cool winter rest to trigger its heavy spring bloom.

Bring the high-contrast, "frozen" beauty of the Silver Lace Cactus to your home and enjoy one of nature's finest floral displays!
