Magnus - San Pedro

A Column of Classic Majesty

The Trichocereus 'Magnus' is a distinguished cultivar that lives up to its name, which translates from Latin as "Great" or "Large." This clone is a favorite among collectors who appreciate a San Pedro with a "heavy" look—featuring thick, deeply defined ribs and a robust girth that gives the plant a powerful, architectural presence.

  • Thick, Deeply Notched Ribs: 'Magnus' is characterized by its wide, prominent ribs that often feature deep, horizontal "notches" above each areole. This gives the cactus a muscular, undulating silhouette that becomes even more pronounced as the plant reaches maturity and gains diameter.

  • Frosty Blue-Green Palette: One of the most alluring traits of this clone is its skin. It often produces a beautiful glaucous waxy coating, resulting in a frosty, teal or blue-green finish. This waxy layer serves as a natural shield against the sun and gives the plant a sophisticated, ethereal glow.

  • Clean, Medium Spination: The 'Magnus' variety typically sports neat, honey-colored to brownish spines that are medium in length—longer than a standard Pachanoi but more refined than a wild Bridgesii. The spines are well-organized along the ribs, accentuating the plant’s geometric precision.

  • Massive Growth Potential: This cultivar is known for its ability to maintain a thick, uniform diameter even as it grows tall. It is a vigorous grower that produces heavy, upright columns, eventually forming a grand, multi-stemmed candelabra shape that commands attention.

This cactus is about 16 inches tall.

All potted plants are local pickup only. Shipped plants will be bare root (no pot or soil).

Trichocereus 'Magnus'

Care and Growing

'Magnus' is a resilient and relatively fast-growing cultivar that thrives when given the right balance of light and nutrients.

  • Light Needs: Prefers Full Sun to Very Bright Light. Maximum light exposure is key to bringing out the intense blue-green coloration of the skin and ensuring the ribs grow thick and close together. In particularly scorching climates, morning sun is best.

  • Water Needs: Moderate. Like other large Trichocereus, 'Magnus' enjoys thorough waterings during the active growing season. Allow the soil to dry out completely between sessions. During the winter months, keep the plant dry to prevent root issues.

  • Soil Needs: Requires Well-Draining, Nutrient-Rich Soil. A mix of 50% inorganic grit (pumice, perlite, or gravel) and 50% high-quality organic cactus soil works well. It responds well to light fertilization in the spring to support its heavy-set growth.

  • Temperature & Hardiness: Hardy down to approximately 20°F to 25°F (-4°C) if kept dry. It is a tough variety, but like all columnar cacti, it should be protected from "wet cold" and standing water during the winter to avoid tip scarring.

Add the powerful, "magnificent" presence of the 'Magnus' San Pedro to your garden—a true pillar of strength and beauty!
