Rat Tail Cactus
The Classic Cascade of Blooms
The Aporocactus flagelliformis, famously known as the Rat Tail Cactus, is the classic specimen of this genus and a favorite among collectors for over 200 years. Native to Mexico, this epiphytic cactus is perfect for hanging high where its unique, cylindrical stems can cascade freely.
Distinctive Trailing Stems: The main appeal of this plant is its long, slender, green stems—hence the "Rat Tail" name. These stems are covered in short, yellowish-brown spines and can easily reach 3 to 4 feet in length (and sometimes longer!) in maturity, creating a gorgeous curtain of foliage.
Spectacular Spring Display: The Rat Tail Cactus is celebrated for its incredibly showy, large deep pink, carmine, or magenta flowers. These funnel-shaped blooms appear prolifically along the stems in the spring, creating an unforgettable, vibrant cascade of color.
Versatile Placement: Ideal for hanging baskets, pedestals, or high shelves where the trailing habit can be fully appreciated. It adds a lush, tropical touch to any bright room or covered patio.
All potted plants are local pickup only. Shipped plants will be bare root (no pot or soil).

Care Tailored for the Rat Tail Cactus
As a jungle cactus, Aporocactus flagelliformis prefers slightly different conditions than its desert relatives.
Light Needs: Prefers Bright, Indirect Light. While it can tolerate a bit of direct morning sun, too much harsh afternoon sun can bleach the stems. Bright light is essential for heavy flowering.
Water Needs: Water more frequently than desert cacti. Allow the soil to become mostly dry between waterings during the growing season (spring/summer). Reduce watering significantly in winter.
Soil Needs: Requires a well-draining, slightly organic soil mix, similar to orchid or bromeliad mixes (standard soil mixed with bark, peat moss, and perlite).
Repotting Tip: It often blooms best when slightly pot-bound, so only repot every 2–3 years to refresh the soil.
Add the classic, colorful charm of the Aporocactus flagelliformis to your home and enjoy its magnificent spring display!
