San Pedro

The Versatile Icon of the Andes

The Trichocereus pachanoi (syn. Echinopsis pachanoi), or Standard San Pedro, is the foundational species that has inspired cactus enthusiasts for generations. Native to the high-altitude regions of Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia, this fast-growing pillar is prized for its clean, "spineless" aesthetic and its incredible resilience in a variety of climates.

  • Smooth and "User-Friendly" Ribs: The standard San Pedro is famous for its very short, almost flush spines. This gives the columns a sleek, tactile quality that is much easier to handle than its fiercer relatives. It typically features 6 to 8 rounded ribs with a smooth, waxy surface.

  • Lush Emerald Greenery: While some cultivars lean toward blue, the standard pachanoi is defined by its vibrant, healthy emerald green skin. It provides a lush, tropical feel to the desert garden, maintaining a deep color even in intense light.

  • Rapid Vertical Growth: This is one of the fastest-growing columnar cacti in existence. Under ideal conditions, a healthy specimen can put on 12 inches or more of new growth in a single season, quickly reaching heights of 10 to 20 feet in the ground.

  • Night-Blooming Elegance: Like the specialty clones, the standard variety produces massive, fragrant white flowers. These nocturnal blooms can reach the size of a dinner plate, opening at dusk and filling the air with a sweet scent to attract pollinators.

This cactus is about 9 inches tall.

All potted plants are local pickup only. Shipped plants will be bare root (no pot or soil).

Care and Growing

The Standard San Pedro is one of the most adaptable cacti available, making it the perfect "gateway" plant for those looking to start a columnar collection.

  • Light Needs: Prefers Full Sun to Very Bright Light. While it is highly sun-tolerant, it can also adapt to partial shade better than many other desert species. However, full sun is required to prevent "etiolation" (thinning of the stems).

  • Water Needs: Moderate. San Pedros originate from regions with higher rainfall than typical desert cacti. They enjoy deep waterings in the summer when the soil is dry but require a bone-dry dormancy period during the winter.

  • Soil Needs: Requires Well-Draining, Fertile Soil. A 50/50 mix of organic potting soil and inorganic drainage (like pumice, perlite, or coarse sand) is perfect. Because of its fast growth, it appreciates regular feedings with a balanced fertilizer during the spring and summer.

  • Temperature & Hardiness: Hardy to approximately 20°F to 25°F (-4°C). It is quite resilient to cold if kept dry, but it should be protected from "black rot" caused by the combination of freezing temperatures and high humidity.

Add the timeless, structural beauty of the Standard San Pedro to your space—the essential pillar for every serious plant lover!
