Starry Dragon Cactus

$50.00

A Masterpiece of Japanese Cultivation

The Astrophytum myriostigma 'Onzuka' is a world-renowned cultivar that represents the pinnacle of Japanese cactus breeding. While the standard "Bishop’s Cap" is known for its fine white dots, the 'Onzuka' takes this aesthetic to the extreme with larger, denser, and more intricate white patterns that can resemble stylized clouds, snowflakes, or dragon scales.

  • Bold "V-Shaped" Markings: The most defining characteristic of a high-quality 'Onzuka' is the thick, white, felt-like flecking. These marks often form distinct V-shapes or heavy "snowfall" patterns along the ribs, creating a high-contrast look against the dark green body of the cactus.

  • Symmetry and Form: This cactus is typically spineless and grows in a distinct star-shaped pattern. It often features five prominent ribs, though some rare specimens may have more or fewer, giving it the geometric appearance of a "Bishop’s Mitre."

  • Delicate Silk Blooms: When it reaches maturity, it produces beautiful, funnel-shaped creamy yellow flowers. These silky blossoms appear at the apex (the top) of the plant, usually in the heat of summer, providing a soft contrast to the bold, textured body.

  • A Living Sculpture: Because of its slow growth and striking monochromatic palette, the 'Onzuka' is often treated as a centerpiece in minimalist or modern succulent collections, looking more like a hand-carved stone than a living plant.

All potted plants are local pickup only. Shipped plants will be bare root (no pot or soil).

Care and Growing

As a highly specialized cultivar, the 'Onzuka' requires a bit more attention to its environment than standard desert cacti to maintain its pristine white markings.

  • Light Needs: Prefers Bright, Indirect Light. While it loves light, the heavy white flecking can be sensitive to intense, scorching midday sun. Bright, filtered light is ideal for maintaining its crisp white patterns without causing "burn" marks.

  • Water Needs: Low. This hybrid is particularly sensitive to excess moisture. Use the "soak and dry" method strictly, and ensure the plant is never sitting in damp soil. During the winter, it should be kept completely dry.

  • Soil Needs: Requires a High-Mineral, Fast-Draining Mix. A blend consisting of 70-80% inorganic material—such as pumice, perlite, or lava rock—is recommended. This mimics the rocky, well-aerated environments where its ancestors thrive.

  • Temperature & Hardiness: This is a tender cultivar. It should be kept in temperatures above 50°F (10°C) for best health. While it can survive brief cold snaps if dry, it is best suited for indoor collections or climate-controlled greenhouses.
